Meteorological spring has arrived, which means it’s time to evaluate the 2023-2024 winter season.
December kicked off meteorological winter with near normal temperatures and precipitation in the Augusta area. But things changed a bit for January and February.
Overall, the winter season was slightly cooler than average and slightly drier than average at Augusta Regional Airport, the main weather reporting station for Augusta.
| Augusta Regional Airport | December | January | February |
| Observed Precip. | 4.42″ | 2.70″ | 3.36″ |
| Departure | +0.55″ | -1.14″ | -0.31″ |
| Average Observed Temp. | 49.6° | 46.0° | 50.4° |
| Departure | +0.2° | -1.4° | -0.4° |
For the season as a whole at Augusta Regional Airport, temperatures were 0.4° below the 30-year average (1991-2020) and precipitation was 0.90″ below the 30-year average.
At Augusta’s Daniel Field Airport, the story is a little different. Daniel Field sits at a much higher elevation than Augusta Regional Airport which usually causes it to be warmer at night, and is also closer to the population center of Augusta, so the urban heat island effect is more pronounced at night as well.
| Daniel Field Airport | December | January | February |
| Observed Precip. | 3.66″ | 3.01″ | 2.71″ |
| Departure | +0.16″ | -0.76″ | -0.76″ |
| Average Observed Temp. | 52.2° | 48.4° | 53.9° |
| Departure | +1.1° | -0.6° | +1.5° |
For the season as a whole at Daniel Field Airport, temperatures were 0.7° above the 30-year average (1991-2020) and precipitation was 1.36″ below the 30-year average.
If we combine the two locations, it’s safe to say the 2023-2024 winter brought near normal temperatures and slightly below normal precipitation.
