Persistent Summer Cool Snap Makes History

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A sudden break from extreme heat has persisted for the first part of August in the Augusta area.

The cool snap came as a surprise to many because of the very hot and humid weather that plagued the area during the month of July, and even into August 1.

Temperatures the first 10 days of August have been significantly below average for this time of year. For August 1-10, the average temperature recorded at Augusta Regional Airport was 75.9°, which is 6.9° below the 1991-2020 normal. Temperatures have been cool enough to make the first 10 days of August the coolest on record for Augusta going back at least to 1943, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Center. These temperatures are more on par with temperatures Augustans might expect in mid to late September.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that average high temperature for Augusta during the first 10 days of the month (82.2°) has been the coolest ever recorded, so there is good reason to believe that this period may be the coolest on record for the Augusta area, even when taking into account the overnight lows, which were not as anomalous as the daytime highs.

Temperatures are expected to rebound to more normal levels by the end of this week as a ridge of high pressure attempts to reestablish itself over the Southeastern U.S. Please visit our weather forecast page for details!
